'Daniel Miall (Baptist) ALS. Folded Folio. 1pp. 22 lines. Dated April 16, 1813, Portsea'
Addressed to Joseph Guttridge Esq, Long Lane, London. Dated stamped. He speaks of 'The Commissioner and some of the corporation here have agreed to a General Petition on behalf of the Mission. John Griffin the Independant Minister has united with them, and has recommended that they all meet together. I feel some difficulty how to act etc' he asks 'what the Committee would recommend ?' Wiith a contemporary portrait of Rev.Daniel Miall, Pastor of The First Baptist Church, Portsea. With an additional signature of Miall pasted at base of portrait.
I presume Daniel Miall of Portsea must have some family connections with Edward Miall of Portsmouth (1809-1881). The latter was a leading Independant Minister and spokesman for 'voluntaryism'. He also sat in the House of Commons. The Guttridge spoken of here was a Baptist Layman and Philanthropist (1752-1844). He was Treasurer of the Particular Baptist Fund. He persuaded the Dissenting Deputies to make successful representation to Parliament, allowing benevolent persons of the various congregations of Christendom, intent upon the promulgation of Christianity, to enter into India, under registration, and unmolested.
