James Hinton (1761-1823) Baptist Minister. Studied at Bristol Baptist College. Called to an Independant Baptist Church in Norwich in 1788. His pastorate was dogged by poverty, ill health and divisions among the people. Nevertheless he built the church up from 29 members to 200. Later built a chapel for 800. An experimental Calvinist. Friend of the Wesleyans & others, for which he suffered abuse and ridicule, especially from the graduates of Oxford, who nearly killed him at one point.
